Opera con Brio, LLC, is an opera-education program, now in its 36th year, conducted by Richard B. Beams, opera lecturer and reviewer and past recipient of NEH Fellowships in both Opera and Literature and Verdi Studies. Classes, ranging from seven to fourteen weeks, include lectures, discussion and recorded musical examples. Classes are most often focussed on the works of one composer or occasionally on a comparative theme such as The Many Faces of Orfeo.

Opera con Brio participants have traveled all over the world to special opera productions and opera festivals to experience works they have studied through Opera con Brio offerings. Opera con Brio tours are always associated with specific Opera con Brio courses and are open only to registrants in those courses. Beginning in 2004, Opera con Brio tours have been offered in conjunction with World Cultural Tours.

Opera con Brio News

In the Spring of 2015, Richard Beams retired from teaching semester-long courses in Opera con Brio after 36 years. He will continue to review, to teach an occasional mini-course or class, and to travel to opera festivals and performances world-wide.

In his honor, many past and present Opera con Brio students contributed generously to two local music institutions, Emmanuel Music and Boston Baroque, to support performances in the season of 2015-2016 in the name of Opera con Brio. They wrote: “The announcement of your retirement inspired in your students at Opera con Brio overwhelming feelings of gratitude for you and all that you have given us.”

Thus Opera con Brio sponsored Emmanuel Music’s performance of Bach’s Cantata BWV #115 on November 22, 2015, co-sponsored an Emmanuel Music Chamber Series concert in the 2015-2016 season and sponsored Andrew Garland in the role of Papageno in Boston Baroque’s performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in the spring of 2016.
